Great Customer Relationships

We all love getting letters from customers telling us how happy they are with our work. There is no better way to gain a new customer than to have a very happy existing customer sing your praises.

We have worked hard to under promise and over deliver to our customers. By that I mean we tell them the truth about costs and schedules and try very hard to exceed the goals set at the beginning.

We allow our folks to make critical decisions that the customer needs right on the spot. Sure, our people make mistakes but we don't crucify them if they are learning from those mistakes. We believe by reacting quickly to our customers' needs that we set ourselves apart from most of our competitors.

There is no better feeling than hearing that a customer is telling others about what a great experience he had with your company.

Is Work Exciting?

The world is mourning Steve Jobs for all of his accomplishments that have improved so many lives.

He was obviously passionate about his career and the results speak for themselves.

Here is a quote from a speech he gave to the graduating class at Stanford in 2005. At this time , he had already been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

I have loved my career in construction. It is a business that will always be needed and each job is different and unique. I highly recommend a construction career.

Building buyers

Having nearly 47,000 full-time workers adds up to a lot of work. It also creates a lot of wealth for a lot of people who go on to consume services and products (they need Keurig's and pool boys too, you know). But it doesn’t stop there. Think about all the people who support Apple products (beyond the Apple stores). Think about all the companies that formed to create programs for Apple devices.

In fact, Apple recently announced that they have topped 15 billion app downloads from the App Store. Their store has over 425,000 apps available, which have been created by a myriad of companies. And it doesn’t stop there, either. For example, Google shows that there are over 40,000 searches per month for the term “iPad sleeve.” Also, earlier this year, Random House made their entire catalog of books (all 17,000 of them) available in the Apple iBookstore. More people working...because of Jobs (double entendre intended).

These examples alone are enough to show how Jobs’ innovations have had a ripple effect, from those who work for him to those who have developed apps for his products—and are growing their own companies and fulfilling their own entrepreneurial dreams. There are countless people and businesses making a profit from his creations, including those selling sleeves, holders, accessories, stickers, you name it! Apple products create a wide variety of markets for those selling add-ons for those products.

From writers who cover stories about Apple’s technology and write books that will be sold to iPad users, to programmers who are busy developing new apps that keep people loving their iPhone, a lot of people are impacted by this company. A lot of people have jobs, that wouldn't otherwise exist.

Rippling out

It is hard to find a lot of people downing Apple, because it is touching so many lives in a positive way. Are You A Salesman?

Everyone has to learn to sell himself , his ideas, his beliefs, etc. You may not think of your self as a salesman but every successful person has had to learn to develop selling skills.

Here is an article by Peter Clemens that elaborates on the premise that to succeed you have to be able to sell!

There are endless situations in life where the key to success is the ability to sell yourself to others. In your career, the ability to convince an interviewer that you are the best person for the job is critical. When it comes to relationships, your ability to show your best qualities can be the crucial factor in clinching a date with the girl or guy you want. When you think about it, if you cannot sell yourself as a person to others, you are going to have a difficult time selling them your ideas, your wishes, your needs, your ambitions, your skills, and your experience.

Be Sold on Yourself

Being sold on yourself comes down to this: you must be aware of your own self-worth. This means you believe in yourself, have faith in yourself, and have confidence in yourself.

Being sold on yourself is not something that usually happens overnight. For many years, I did not like myself. I can, however, personally attest that it is possible to change your life and gain a sense of self-worth when there was once none. If you struggle with your sense of self-worth, here are just 3 ideas that may help:

Live in such a way that you would want to be friends with yourself
Find some time to reflect on what you like about yourself. If this seems hard, start with the smallest of attributes.
Don’t do anything that will give you cause to feel ashamed later.

Have a Saleable Package

This article is predominately about letting others know about the inner contents of your package. That being said, there is no getting around the fact that people judge others based on their appearance. Some questions you may consider asking yourself are: am I looking after my appearance to the best of my ability? Are my clothes appropriate for the image I wish to project?

Be Positive and Enthusiastic

Can you remember the last time you received poor customer service? Did the person look bored, disinterested, and as if they wanted to be anywhere but that place? Don’t be that person. Positivity and enthusiasm can both be developed, but once again it takes work. Here are a few tips to help you:

Look for the best in people
Associate with positive people
Care deeply about something
See life as an adventure
Smile

Be Real and Authentic

Rather than being about who you appear to be, selling yourself is about letting others know who you are as a person. For this reason, lies and half-truths are a recipe for disaster later down the line. By telling the truth, you will earn both trust and respect which, in turn, will help you build a great reputation. Not only that, it will make you feel good about yourself. The last thing you want to do is sell yourself out by compromising your values and principles."

Interviewing For A Job

To give yourself the best chance to win that new position you are after, here are some pointers that I have learned over the years:

1. Have a professional resume' that is checked for misspellings, grammar and overall appearance.

2. Check out your potential employer from the web, their employees, their suppliers and customers. In other words, do your research beforehand.

3. Check out what their dress code is and dress accordingly. If it is casual, be careful not to overdo the casual. For example no revealing clothes, no flip flops, no obviously worn clothing, no excessive perfume or makeup. When in doubt always dress better than necessary and be very neat.

4.If you have tattoos, it is probably better to hide them for the interview.

5. Be very well groomed; neat haircut, clean nails, trimmed facial hair, etc.

6.Think about the questions you have for the interviewer and be prepared beforehand.

7. Don't try to oversell yourself. Let the interviewer ask you what he wants to know.

8. Send a nice handwritten thank you note ASAP after your interview.

9. Be on time!

You are probably saying that all of these are obvious but I see candidates frequently that don't follow some of these points.

Arbor Day

The other day I went by a house we lived in when my kids were growing up. When they were little(25 years ago) we dug up a couple of oak tree saplings from my parents’ yard in Collin County and planted those in our yard in Dallas. Those baby trees are now huge oak trees that many people enjoy past , present, and future .

Our Central Texas Office

Hill & Wilkinson has had an office in Austin, Texas for over two years and has built many projects in Central Texas over the last twenty years.

We have two key people on our staff in Austin who have worked in the central Texas construction business for many years.

Joe Tracy, Director of Construction, spent many years with a large general contractor in Austin and the years immediately previous to Hill & Wilkinson with Endeavor Development in Austin. He has extensive knowledge of the central Texas construction market and has many longtime sub, architect, supplier , and construction user friends that trust his judgement and expertise.

Kristy Attaway, Senior Estimator, has been in Austin many years after graduating from UT Austin. She is well known in the industry for her expertise in preparing accurate budgets, helping subs understand their scope of work , and being competitive on hard bid work.

The Difference Between A Democracy And A Republic

The Real Boss

For all of us that work in companies or government agencies, it is easy to forget that our real boss is the customer. If your outfit does not do a good job of satisfying the customer it eventually goes out of business or for government entities , customers find a way of voting with their feet or voting out their representatives.

I have attached a recent "Wall Street Journal" editorial that discusses Texas A&M's effort to evaluate professors by their effectiveness for students and for the University. There is huge resistance in the academic community to this kind of accountability for professors. Texas A&M is right on track with this kind of real world thinking.

Building Information Modeling

I have been in the construction business since 1970 and the best new technology I have seen in my career is called Building Information Modeling. It could also be called virtual design and construction. It is a process that allows the entire design and construction team to collaborate on all details of the project using computer technology.

We just completed The Student Services Building for The University of Texas at Dallas and the team( Hill & Wilkinson, Perkins & Will, University of Texas at Dallas, and key subcontractors ) collaborated through this process to save considerable time and money.

A Better Way to Deliver Building Projects

I have been in the construction industry since 1970 and have been involved in many ways of delivering building projects. By far the the best approach is selecting the key team members early in the design process so that everyone is working toward the same goals, i. e. most value for the least cost, most effective schedule, best long term operating usefulness, and sustainable elements.

By key team members, I mean owner, owner's rep. , architect/engineer, general contractor, key subs and suppliers. Having these key team members discussing each vital element of the project

before the design has progressed very far is vital to the overall success of the project.

The attached article discusses various methods of delivery and the pros and cons of each. Delivering a major construction project is a complicated and critical undertaking for any owner/user. This article is a great guide for deciding on the best approach for a given project.

Innovation and Creativity

I am an engineering graduate of Southern Methodist University and am fortunate to be a member of the SMU Engineering Executive Board.

The SMU Engineering School is making great strides in becoming one of the premier engineering schools in the Country.

The recently established Hart Center for Engineering Leadership in SMU's Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering is dedicated to creating the 21st century engineer, one prepared to lead the way in restoring American competitiveness and meeting the toughest challenges facing society.

I have interacted with several of the SMU engineering students and am amazed with their creativity, presentation skills and intelligence!

I have recently been a judge in the SMU Innovation Competition. Students are asked to submit ideas for entirely new inventions and then to make a plan to develop and market these ideas. The quality of these ideas has blown me away!

With schools such as SMU turning out creative leaders , I believe America will continue to generate products and services that make the world a better place for all.

This past weekend, I took some guests to a beautiful place in the Northern New Mexico mountains to fish, hike, and relax. Nature was at its most beautiful in brilliant Fall colors. The weather was continually changing with rain, snow, sleet, and sun.

When I am in this particular spot on this earth, I am the closest to God because I see His awesome work in every direction. I am truly humbled by Nature’s grandeur! How can one not believe in God when being in a place like this?

Perseverance

Doesn't it always impress you when you see somebody persevere under very difficult conditions and still reach their goal? I have been so impressed by the perseverance of one of the young men training at the gym where I workout that I made a point of getting to know him and ultimately hired him to be on our team. He has turned out to be one of our superstars!

Anytime someone exhibits perseverance in work, play, improving personal habits,etc, that person will very likely have perseverance in whatever life throws at him. That is the kind of person people and companies want to associate with.

Does Power Corrupt?

We have all known people who were great with others and considered nice guys until they achieved power. Then they lost their people skills and became tyrants. It is a very tough task to be anointed with power and still retain true empathy with those beneath.

The Speed of Change

Change is coming at us so fast that we lose perspective about how dramatic much of the recent change has been. Future change will occur even faster.

At Hill & Wilkinson, we are rapidly implementing Building Information Modeling on all new projects. We have a full time LEED expert on board for our many green projects. We are developing a wellness program to help our people lead healthier lives and to help our Company with healthcare costs. None of these ideas were on our radar screen ten years ago.

It is critical that we embrace change and continue to improve or our services will quickly be outdated.

There will always be a need for good builders but the new tools will make the industry much better.

Cell Phone Etiquette

Have you ever had a meeting or a conversation interrupted by a another person's cell phone ringing? I would say that most of us experience this often.

I personally do not take my cell phone into meetings. Most calls and texts aren't emergencies and if I am expecting some urgent call I let somebody know where I am so I can be contacted.

I think it is rude to put your cell phone on the table in front of friends or meeting attendees. It signals to them that your call or text is more important than they are.

I have been in meetings where someone not only had their cell phone out and visible but answered the call or text in front of everyone!

I am old enough to know what it was like when there were no cell phones and I don't remember ever missing anything so urgent that it would have been disastrous.

The next time you are in a meeting or personal conversation, think about how the other people feel when your phone goes off.

What is a great leader?

There are many definitions of a great leader and one that really hit home with me is a great leader is a great helper. Tom Peters discusses this in his new book
"The Little BIG Things, a compendium of 163 ways to pursue excellence".

At Hill & Wilkinson, we have a great leader who has helped many of our people to succeed and always has time to help any of our people and customers, suppliers, subcontractors , architects, and many others. Kevin Sellers is loved and admired by
everyone who knows him because he treats each person with great respect. Kevin is a person that anyone would want to have as a friend and mentor.

My last post was about managing one's time to be able to hit the things really important in your life.

One of the biggest time grabbers in today's world is our cell phone. we are inundated with calls, texts and emails. It is amazing how many people I see using their phones while at a meal with others, in meetings with others, in church, etc, etc.

I just read a great opinion article in the "Wall Street Journal" titled "To Tweet Or Not To Tweet". The author reviews a book by Powers called "Hamlet's Blackberry". The premise is that we just need to say no to many of the digital intrusions and cultivate a quieter and more focused life. Powers proposes that we set aside one day each week to be completely free of digital intrusions.

My way of escaping is to go fishing and leave my cellphone in the car. Even if I catch no fish it is great to be away from digital nagging for a short while.

Time Management

We each have many demands on our time. Managing time is all about setting priorities. There should be emphasis on balance between work, play, family and religion.

It is tough to balance all those demands on one's time but the happiest people are the ones that choose a personally satisfying balance.

At Hill & Wilkinson, we emphasize to our folks that without balance in all aspects of life , burnout and low productivity can happen.

Think about prioritizing your time and try to get the best balance you can.

Responsibility for Mistakes

We certainly want our people to take responsibility for their mistakes and those of their team and we want them to learn from their mistakes. We don't throw our people under the bus for a mistake and we don't want them doing that to their team members.

The mark of a good leader is admitting fallibility and taking responsibility for corrective action.

Family Feeling

Our Company has worked hard to promote the family feeling. This means mentoring others, wanting others to succeed, caring about the well being of fellow employees and their loved ones, and having fun together. We have a "Fun Committee" in our Company to look for ways to build camaraderie and just have fun together.

We Americans love Memorial Day for several reasons. First, it is a national holiday honoring our fallen soldiers. Many of you know my #1 passion is fishing. So why start a blog?

First, a blog is the easiest way for me to talk about our people and our projects. I can do this from a boat, too.

Second, I enjoy a good conversation about current topics in our industry -- from financing to new technologies. To me, good conversation is a contact sport so share what's on your mind.
